Competitive dance is a popular, widespread activity in which competitors perform dances in any of several permitted dance styles—such as acro, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, modern, and tap—before a common group of judges.

The competitive dance industry largely consists of competition production companies that conduct regional competitions at stops along their annual, nationwide tours. Dancers who compete at these regional competitions are usually dance students ranging in age from about five to eighteen years old. Dance schools typically arrange for their classes to compete as groups. Advanced dance students often compete solo or in small groups (e.g., duo, trio, quad) in addition to competing with their dance class groups.

Competitive dancers must be physically fit because even short dances can be physically demanding. Also, dancers must continuously train to maintain and improve their technique, balance skills, strength and flexibility. Competitive dancing requires dedication as many months may be spent practicing dance and developing dance routines.

Students are required to audition for admission into the competitive program.  Auditions take place in June/July.

A novice dancer is a student or a group of students that has not competed in a division such as solo, duet/trio or group.

"What are somethings to consider before auditioning for the team?"

Dependent on the program your studio class time will be increased. There may be more classes per week than you are used to taking with recreational classes. Some teams require more than one practice a week; others require extra classes like jumps & turns, ballet technique, or conditioning.
You will be committed to competitions: 2 - 4competitions for recreational up to 5 per year for the regular program.
Competition team members must take classes during the summer. We suggest summer program June - July and require attendance for our dance intensive program in August.

"Is there more of a cost than recreational programs?"

While there are packages for monthly technique classes that are geared to the competitive dancer there are other costs involved such as;
Costumes, competitive costumes are a higher quality because (1) they are judged for excellence and originality and (2) they will be worn many times throughout the season.
Competition Fees for each routine a student enters per competition.
